ABOUT ZAAN (ROZANNE) HERBST
I am Zaan, a self-taught artist based in Somerset West. I create unique, individual and contemporary artworks designed to bring character, feeling and a distinctive visual voice into the spaces and homes of those who live with them.
Working primarily with charcoal, oil and acrylic, my work explores the interplay of light and shadow, emotion and memory. I am drawn to portraiture and figurative studies, capturing quiet moments of introspection, resilience and grace. My charcoal drawings build depth through light, shadow and texture, while my paintings include portraits that invite connection and leave space for personal interpretation, alongside expressive abstracts alive with colour, movement and emotion.
Each piece begins as an observation and becomes a meditation. I believe art should not shout; it should whisper and stay with you. My process is slow, layered and deeply personal. From the initial charcoal sketch to the final glaze of oil, I seek honesty over perfection.
Thank you for being here and for supporting independent art.
